đïž Practical guide to the hike
Imbros Gorge is one of the most popular gorges in Crete. Itâs less demanding than Samaria Gorge, making it a good choice for families and experienced walkers who want a scenic hike without too much difficulty. The walk begins in the small village of Imbros, located on a plateau with parking and a cafĂ© where you can stop for refreshments before heading out.
The trail leads through varied terrain with striking rock formations and narrow passages. Youâll be walking steadily downhill towards the village of Komitades, closer to the sea, where several tavernas offer food and a place to relax after your walk.

đșïž Start and finish
The hike is about 8 kilometers long and usually takes between 2 and 3 hours at a relaxed pace. The terrain is mostly rocky and uneven, so good footwear with ankle support is highly recommended. Thereâs a total descent of around 600 meters, so while the walk is easier than Samaria, it still requires some fitness and caution.
In Komitades, youâll find good transport options like bus, taxi, or even boat, making it easy to return or continue exploring the area. We recommend parking in Komitades.

The walk into Imbros Gorge begins here in Komitades, in the municipality of Sfakia. At the entrance, youâll find signs with practical information in several languages. The hiking trail follows the dry riverbed and winds south through the valley toward the sea. The terrain is rocky but easy to follow. Many hikers start from this point and complete the 8-kilometer walk in 2 to 3 hours.

đ What to bring
- Good shoes with solid support are essential. Hiking boots or trail shoes are strongly recommended â not sandals or thin-soled sneakers. Some manage with regular trainers, but they offer less stability and comfort.
- At least 2 liters of water (there are a few refill points, but start well stocked)
- Sunscreen and a hat or other head covering
- Light food or snacks
- Layered clothing depending on the weather
- Toilet paper and hand sanitizer
- Blister plasters and basic first aid supplies
- Trekking poles if you want extra support
- Cash for tavernas, bus tickets, and entrance fees (donât rely on card payments in rural Greece)

The kri-kri goats around Imbros Gorge are used to people and rarely bothered by traffic. Many of them rest along the roadside near Komitades, and some even wander into the middle of the road. This is everyday life in Sfakia, and itâs common to encounter goats both on the road and inside the gorge. Drive slowly and let them pass at their own pace.

đ Tip before you start

That way, youâll enjoy a relaxed beginning to the hike and avoid waiting for transport when your legs are tired afterwards. When you reach the end, itâs great to just sit down for a meal with a sea view. Having your car ready nearby makes it easy to leave whenever youâre ready â no need to search for a taxi in the heat.

Towards the end of Imbros Gorge, the path narrows to less than two meters wide. Here you walk between towering vertical cliffs with just a small strip of sky above. This is one of the most photographed and memorable parts of the hike â a natural place to pause and take in the surroundings.

Always take your trash with you and respect the natural surroundings and wildlife. Many hikers recommend starting early to avoid the heat and crowds.

đ The viewpoint â Imbros Gorge View
If you are passing through and are not going through the Imbros Gorge, there is a small viewpoint with a simple café and parking. From here you get a panoramic view of the south coast and the Libyan Sea, while looking down into the mountains surrounding the gorge itself. The place is popular as a stopover for both those who are just passing by and for motorists on the way between Imbros and Chora Sfakion.
The terrace with tables and chairs offers the opportunity to take a break in the shade, enjoy a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice or just sit back and take in the scenery. The terrace is covered with a canvas roof that shelters from the wind, and through the transparent walls you can look down into the gorge and out across the coast.
