🐾 A home among the olive trees
Fundraising is mentioned.
Along a dusty gravel road outside the village of Finokalia in Lasithi Prefecture lies an animal shelter unlike any other. Here more than a hundred dogs live in the shade of old olive trees, surrounded by stone walls, plastic buckets and simple handmade shelters. The place is run by Thomas and Brigitte, a German couple who have devoted their lives to giving abandoned and mistreated animals a second chance. There are no employees, no fixed opening hours and no tourist signs pointing the way. Still someone is always knocking on the gate. Sometimes with a dog they can no longer care for. Sometimes with a blanket, a bag of food or simply a kind word.
Fino Animal Rescue is a private initiative. Donations are made through their own Facebook page and PayPal link. Kallikratis.no is not responsible for the fundraising.

Here we see three of the dogs at Fino Animal Rescue in Finokalia in Lasithi Prefecture. Two of them stand alert beside an olive tree while a third moves quickly past. They live freely within fenced areas and settle into the rhythm of each day together. Each dog has its own background and character, yet they share the same past and the same hope for safety and human contact. The photo offers a close look at daily life in the shelter where simple surroundings are shaped by care and attention.

🐶 Dogs with names and stories
Every dog has its own story and many of them carry it with them. Some are cautious while others are openly happy to seek human contact. All have names and many have lived here for a long time. Most move freely within fenced areas in small groups and some will run over to greet you as you enter. You hear barking and see wagging tails and curious eyes following your every step. It can feel chaotic yet the atmosphere is warm. Thomas and Brigitte know each dog individually.

This light coloured dog approaches with care, eyes that seem both questioning and hopeful. Many of the dogs at Fino Animal Rescue in Finokalia have had a difficult start in life but gradually learn to trust people again. Some seek contact right away while others need time. This moment captures a quiet meeting between dog and human, without words yet full of meaning.

🏡 Simple conditions and great commitment
The shelter has no luxuries. Instead there are simple shelters with straw, makeshift roofs and dog beds built from old tyres and wooden pallets. There is a constant need for food, blankets, parasite treatments and helping hands. Every day dogs must be fed, areas cleaned, walks taken and veterinarians consulted. Even so the atmosphere is friendly and down to earth. There is no administration and no office. Everything is about the daily care of the animals.

A group of dogs gathers in anticipation, standing close together on the red soil at Fino Animal Rescue in Finokalia in Lasithi Prefecture. This moment just before the food is served shows the rhythm of the pack, with sniffing noses, wagging tails and a few already aiming for their usual spot. Mealtimes are the highlight of the day, and even in the bustle it is easy to see which dogs know each other well and which prefer to wait a little back. Everything happens calmly, yet the energy in the air is unmistakable.

🌱 A place you never forget
Visiting Fino Animal Rescue is not like going to an institution. It feels more like stepping into someone else’s everyday life and becoming part of it for a moment. Many visitors say it becomes the strongest memory of their stay. Not because it is overwhelming or sad, but because it is real and personal.

One of the long term residents at Fino Animal Rescue in Finokalia has settled into a spot on the gravel, partly in the sun and partly in the shade. In the heat of the day many dogs seek out cool places to rest, and this one knows exactly where to lie. The eyes stay alert while the body relaxes. Moments like this give rhythm to daily life at the shelter, a balance of calm, safety and quiet presence.

🐕 What you can do
Visits are possible but must be arranged in advance. You can help by walking the dogs, giving them time and attention, and assisting with practical tasks. The shelter accepts food, blankets and dog equipment, and donation links are available on their own pages.

Terry, Theo and Bonita enjoy a playful moment at Fino Animal Rescue. They are long term residents and have formed strong bonds with each other. Here we see them as they usually are, curious, trusting and always ready for a bit of social interaction in the open surroundings behind the shelter.
